Electronic Arts ends development on its multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game

The End of Dawngate: EA Stops Development of MOBA Game

The popularity of League of Legends has spurred developers to create their own multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games. However, one contender in this crowded market has called it quits.

Electronic Arts announced yesterday that Waystone Games will no longer be developing the MOBA game Dawngate, due to feedback received during beta testing.

“This isn’t the outcome we wanted, but beta testing is about learning and improving, and ultimately, about making difficult decisions about how to proceed,” wrote Matt Bromberg, group general manager at Electronic Arts.

Waystone Games attempted to set themselves apart by focusing on storytelling, which is not typically a priority in MOBAs. In the esports world, what matters most to players is rules design and character balance.

The Dawngate beta will continue for the next 90 days, and players who have made purchases in the game will be refunded within the next 10 days. If players require assistance with processing refunds, they can contact Electronic Arts at help.ea.com.
