Riot unveils plans to unbench Kench in League of Legends’ 2023 preseason

Tahm Kench Receives New Changes in Patch 12.23

Since his release in 2015, Tahm Kench has been a problematic champion in League of Legends. His Devour ability, which can save immobile AD carries from certain death, has made him a menace in the bot lane as a support. However, Riot Games is looking to address this issue with the upcoming Patch 12.23, aiming to reduce his support power and potentially shift him back to the top lane.

In the final patch of the year, Riot will be making several adjustments to Tahm Kench, as well as bringing Zeri back to the meta and adjusting Dr. Mundo for the jungle. The changes to Tahm Kench are designed to prevent him from functioning as a walking Zhonya Hourglass, a powerful tool for protecting teammates. These changes may result in Tahm Kench returning to his original role in the top lane.

The changes to Tahm Kench include:

  • An Acquired Taste will now scale with two percent of ability power (AP) per 100 bonus health points (HP).
  • Tongue Lash’s AP ratio will be increased from 90 percent to 100 percent.
  • Abyssal Dive’s AP ratio will be increased from 125 percent to 150 percent.
  • Devour’s shield will decay by 200 over time instead of lasting for a flat 2.5 seconds.
  • The damage part of Tahm Kench’s ultimate ability will have its AP ratio increased from five percent per 100 AP to seven percent per 100 AP.

These changes aim to reduce Tahm Kench’s power as a support by adjusting his abilities. It is expected that his support potential, particularly his ability to provide a significant shield with Devour, will be toned down. However, players can anticipate Tahm Kench becoming a formidable force in the top lane, especially in the early game with his powerful Tongue Lash ability.

Patch 12.23 is scheduled to go live on December 7, according to Riot’s official patch schedule.
