Ardent Censer’s effectiveness on self-shields is removed in Patch 10.1

League of Legends Patch 10.1: Changes to Ardent Censer

In the first update of the new year for League of Legends, Patch 10.1, there will be a significant change to the item Ardent Censer. According to a Reddit comment from a Riot staffer, Ardent Censer will no longer work with self-shields[1].

This change is notable because the item has seen some peculiar uses that have gained popularity since it was introduced during the pre-season

What is Ardent Censer?

Ardent Censer is an item that enhances healing and shielding abilities. It also provides on-hit damage and attack speed to champions who are shielded. Due to this feature, champions like Diana, Skarner, and Udyr have been able to use the item to gain on-hit damage and increased dueling power early in the game through their self-shields[2].

However, with the removal of this feature, these unique builds should become less viable.

Remainder of Ardent Censer Benefits

The remaining benefits of Ardent Censer will remain unchanged. The Frenzy effect will continue to function as it does, and the on-hit damage bonuses will be retained. However, these bonuses will only apply when shielding allies, not oneself[3].

Ardent Censer’s History

Ardent Censer has been a popular item for enchanter supports like Janna and has been in the game since Patch 4.10, which was over five years ago. Over the years, it has undergone several changes to its impact on healing, shields, and damage[4].
