Riot Games CEO Marc Merrill Says MMO Won’t Happen Anytime Soon

League of Legends fans have been eagerly awaiting the possibility of an MMO set in the Runeterra universe. Unfortunately, Riot Games CEO Marc Merrill has revealed that creating an MMO is extremely challenging and won’t be happening in the near future.

In an interview with Travis Gafford, Merrill expressed the company’s willingness to explore new ideas based on player requests, but he made it clear that an MMO is not currently in the works. “I would love to make an MMO, but just to manage expectations, if we were to do something like that it wouldn’t be any time soon,” Merrill said.

New Game Announcements Give Hope to League of Legends Fans

During League of Legends’ 10-year anniversary celebrations, Riot Games unveiled a slate of new games in development. These include a first-person shooter, a card game called Legends of Runeterra, a fighting game, and a story-driven, turn-based RPG titled Ruined King. While an MMO was not among the announced games, it’s exciting to see the universe of Runeterra expanding across different genres.

Creating an MMO is No Easy Task

Despite rumors regarding a potential MMO, Merrill emphasized the difficulty and complexity of developing such a game. He highlighted the immense effort and dedication required to build an MMO, comparing it to “shipping a freaking rocket.” It’s clear that if Riot Games were to pursue an MMO, they would want to do it justice.

The Future of Runeterra and Riot Games

Although an MMO may not be on the horizon, League of Legends fans can still hold onto hope for the future. The ever-evolving world of Runeterra presents endless possibilities and could eventually become the setting for an MMO. In the meantime, there are plenty of other exciting titles to look forward to from Riot Games. So while the wait may be long, it will undoubtedly be worth it when the League of Legends MMO finally becomes a reality.
