Riot Games Discontinues Physical Rewards for Challenger Players at End of Season

Riot Games Ends Physical Rewards for Challenger Players in League of Legends

Riot Games has announced that it will no longer be providing physical rewards to players who reach Challenger status in League of Legends. The decision was revealed in an update on Riot’s website, citing changes to the ranked system and the number of Challengers for 2019. This marks the end of a tradition that began in 2016.

A Look Back at the History of Challenger Rewards

In its sixth season, Riot Games introduced physical rewards as an incentive for players to reach Challenger status. These exclusive prizes included a limited edition Challenger jacket and a Collector’s Medallion for the top 10 solo queue players. Last year, players who reached Challenger received a special backpack designed in a similar fashion to the jacket.

The Decline in Interest and the Decision to End Physical Rewards

Over time, the novelty of physical rewards diminished, with many players even selling their jackets on eBay for high prices. This, coupled with the logistical challenge of shipping items to numerous players in different regions, likely contributed to Riot Games’ decision to discontinue the practice.

While physical rewards may no longer be available, the competitive nature of League of Legends and the pursuit of reaching the upper ranks of the ranked ladder remain as enticing as ever for players.
