FunPlus Phoenix (FPX) suffered their fourth consecutive series loss in the LPL 2022 Spring Split today, this time against ThunderTalk Gaming, who are currently at the bottom of the standings.

In today’s League of Legends matchup, both teams had different motivations to fight. For ThunderTalk, who had a 1-9 record prior to the series, it was a matter of pride and avoiding the last place. However, for FPX, this win was crucial to keep their hopes alive for qualifying in the Spring Split Playoffs. With a 4-7 record and outside the playoff bubble, defeating ThunderTalk was a must to break their losing streak and regain a spot in the playoff picture.

Unfortunately, FPX faced another 2-1 defeat today. Despite drafting strong meta picks such as Hecarim, Graves, and Aphelios, FPX couldn’t execute their composition’s win conditions for an early advantage. ThunderTalk’s mid laner UCAL dominated FPX’s mid laner Gori, securing five kills within 20 minutes, which ultimately led to ThunderTalk’s 26-minute victory in the first game.

In the second match of the series, FPX bounced back with a 26-minute victory over ThunderTalk, thanks to Lwx’s outstanding performance on Jinx. However, FPX struggled again in the final game to capitalize on their early and mid game jungle picks. Throughout game three, FPX’s Clid couldn’t out-pressure ThunderTalk, resulting in a 5,000 gold deficit at 20 minutes. After a fight for the Baron, ThunderTalk secured their second victory of the LPL 2022 Spring Split, capitalizing on their early advantage.

With this loss, FPX now has a 4-8 record in the LPL 2022 Spring Split, placing them 13th in the regular season standings. Despite having a 4-4 record at the halfway mark, FPX’s recent performances have been a far cry from their early Split success. Their challenges in closing out series were once again evident against a team they needed to defeat to stay competitive in the playoff race.

On the other hand, ThunderTalk’s win improved their record to 2-9 and lifted them out of last place in the LPL. While making it to the playoffs might be unlikely for ThunderTalk, winning against higher-ranked teams in the Spring Split boosts morale in the final weeks of the season. By defeating the struggling FPX, ThunderTalk may have a chance to upset more teams in the latter half of the Spring Split.
