Yone’s participation in Worlds 2020 canceled, Lillia given the green light

A New Champion’s Debut at Worlds 2020: Yone vs. Lillia

The latest champion in League of Legends, Yone, won’t be making his debut at Worlds 2020, as announced by Riot Games today.

Riot posted a new dev blog today, discussing the challenges of balancing champions at the professional level. In the blog, Riot stated that Yone won’t be available for Worlds 2020. However, Lillia will be enabled for the tournament since she has already been played in the top four regions.

“New champions and VGUS must be enabled for playoffs in all four of the top regions in order to be playable at the next international tournament,” Riot explained.

Lillia has already seen professional play in the LPL and LCS, making her eligible for the playoff stages. She has performed well in the jungle, thanks to her scaling options and mobility advantages over other junglers.

Riot is determined to prevent Worlds 2020 from having an overpowered champion that could disrupt the integrity of matches. Last year, Pantheon had a 100-percent presence rate in the first week after his rework, which Riot wants to avoid with Yone.

Although Yone is relatively strong in the current solo queue meta, it’s uncertain whether he will be consistently played at the professional level because his kit is similar to Yasuo’s. Regardless, Yone has already received multiple nerfs to his Q, W, and R abilities due to his effectiveness in the mid lane.

On the other hand, Lillia is expected to make an appearance at Worlds 2020, especially when paired against farm-heavy junglers like Graves or Olaf.
