League of Legends: A Popular Game with a Growing Roster
After 13 years since its release, League of Legends (LoL) continues to be one of the world’s most loved games, attracting millions of players every month. Developer Riot Games consistently updates the game, providing players with fresh content to explore.
Riot occasionally teases the upcoming release of new characters, called champions, in the game. Each champion has unique abilities and is designed to be played in specific roles on the Summoner’s Rift map. The developer also improves older champions through “reworks,” updating their visuals and abilities to make them more modern.
When LoL was initially launched, it had only 40 champions, many of which have been significantly changed over time. Riot released champions at a faster pace, resulting in a surplus of options for players to choose from.
How Many Champions are There in League of Legends?
Although the release schedule has slowed down to a minimum of five champions per year, there are now 162 champions in LoL. Most of these champions are designed for and played in the top and mid lanes, where players commonly face opponents in solo matchups.
The latest addition to LoL is K’Sante, the Pride of Nazumah, introduced in Patch 12.21. K’Sante is the first true tank champion released since Ornn. His kit revolves around his weapons, called ntofos, which he primarily uses to bludgeon his opponents. However, he can also sharpen them to pierce through even the strongest defenses.
K’Sante is the final champion to be released in 2022, following the notable releases of Zeri, Renata Glasc, Bel’Veth, and Nilah, all of whom have had a significant impact on the evolving meta. Although there isn’t much information available about the next champion coming to LoL, a recent preseason overview video hinted at a new Darkin champion who wields a powerful dagger.
