UC Irvine Wins 2018 League of Legends College Championship in Dominating Fashion

UC Irvine emerged victorious in the 2018 League of Legends College Championship, defeating Columbia College in a convincing 3-0 sweep.

A Tournament Filled with Surprises

The tournament was full of unexpected outcomes, as top seed and defending champions, Maryville University, were eliminated on the first day of competition. However, the grand finale saw second-seeded UC Irvine showcase their dominance against fifth-seeded Columbia.

An Epic Clash of Titans

Both teams proved their worth throughout the tournament, with impressive performances in the quarterfinals and semifinals. They combined for a remarkable 10-1 record, setting the stage for a highly-anticipated final showdown.

UCI’s Stellar Performance

In the first game, UC Irvine and Columbia remained closely matched in kills, but UC Irvine took the lead in objective control. Led by jungler Jung “Youngbin” Young-bin, who had previously played for LCS organization Team Liquid, UC Irvine secured every drake and established a substantial advantage in tower control. Youngbin’s outstanding gameplay, including a double Flame horizon, proved to be pivotal in UCI’s success.

Throughout the match, Youngbin’s relentless pressure was overwhelming for Columbia, and even when playing on less damage-focused champions, he consistently created opportunities for his team. UC Irvine even achieved the only Pentakill of the tournament with great teamwork.

UCI’s Triumph and a Glimpse into the Future

In a flash, UC Irvine sealed their victory and claimed their first League of Legends College Championship title. The dominant performance showcased the immense potential of the new generation of North American talent. It wouldn’t be surprising to see some of the UCI players making their way onto LCS rosters in the near future. The 2018 NA LCS Summer Split is set to begin on June 16.
