Community backlash leads Leaguepedia to remove Bjergsen, Ruler, and Nuguri from Dade Award page

Controversial Dade Award Sparks Outrage and Changes

The Dade Award, established by Leaguepedia, is known for highlighting players who fail to meet expectations at the League of Legends World Championship. This year, however, the award has caused controversy as three players have been removed from consideration.

Removing Top Players from the Dade Award

Leaguepedia has made the decision to remove Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg, Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk, and Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon from the Dade Award page, causing further uproar in the community.

The Origins of the Dade Award

The Dade Award is named after Bae “dade” Eo-jin, a player from Samsung Ozone who experienced a disappointing performance in the 2013 World Championship. This award was initially given from 2013 to 2016 by Duncan “Thorin” Shields and Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles on their talk show, Summoning Insight.

Criticism and Change

After 2016, the Dade Award became the responsibility of a contributor who wanted to document the award on the Leaguepedia website. This new system led to backlash, with many questioning the authority and relevance of the award.

This year, Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon was awarded the Dade Award, but his performance at the World Championship was not nearly as disappointing as dade’s in 2013. The award was also given to Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk in 2018, despite his decent performance with Gen.G.

In response to the controversy, River, the manager of the wiki, published a statement acknowledging the mistake and stating that the page would no longer be updated and no more awards would be given out. However, the page will remain online due to the award’s historical presence in the esports scene.
