The Rise of KomodoHype: The New Face of PogChamp on Twitch

Twitch has made a bold move by replacing the iconic PogChamp emote with KomodoHype. This decision comes in the wake of insensitive comments made by Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, the previous face of PogChamp.

Twitch took advantage of the opportunity to keep things interesting by introducing a new face for PogChamp every 24 hours. Prior to today, Twitch used this revolving door of emotes to promote different streamers on the platform.

While many users appreciated the rotation of emotes, there was a faction of Twitch users who were vocal about wanting KomodoHype to replace PogChamp.

KomodoHype closely resembles Gootecks’ PogChamp emote but with a larger mouth and reptilian skin. Since the removal of PogChamp, the usage of KomodoHype on Twitch has skyrocketed. According to statistics from Twitchemotes.com, KomodoHype was used more than one million times per day from January 7 to 9. Previously, it was used less than 300,000 times a day on average.

Following Twitch’s changes, the usage of KomodoHype continued to rise, with daily usage ranging from 438,000 to 644,225.

Twitch has not indicated any plans to deviate from its promise to change the face of PogChamp every day. In fact, the platform recently promoted the daily PogChamp face change on social media.

While KomodoHype’s reign as the face of PogChamp may only be temporary, it shares the spotlight with impressive company, including popular Spanish-speaking streamer TheGrefg, who recently broke Twitch’s record for concurrent viewers.
