Collaboration Between Overwatch 2 and X-Men ’97: A Dream Come True

Imagine loading up Overwatch 2, reaching the main menu, and being greeted by the iconic theme song from the X-Men animated series while Soldier: 76 dons a full Cyclops cosplay. This is a dream that has taken hold of my imagination after being inspired by a Reddit thread on March 25th. The thread called for a collaboration between OW2 and the new X-Men ’97 animated series on Disney Plus, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It absolutely needs to happen, and it needs to happen soon.

The premiere of X-Men ’97’s two episodes last week has been on my mind lately (as someone who grew up watching the original show, it’s truly incredible). And now, this idea of a skin collaboration has joined it. The collaboration, proposed by a Reddit user named cobanat, perfectly matches several OW2 heroes with their X-Men counterparts.

The proposed lineup includes Soldier: 76 as Cyclops, Baptiste as Bishop, Mercy as Jean Grey, Genji as Gambit, Tracer as Jubilee, Sojourn as Storm, Echo as Morph, Junker Queen as Wolverine, Zenyatta as Professor Charles Xavier, Moira as Rogue, Sigma as Magneto, Winston as Beast, and Mauga as Juggernaut.

One pairing that particularly stands out is Magneto Sigma, as they both effortlessly float and hurl objects at people. Meanwhile, Gambit Genji would be a sublime choice, with a staff replacing his sword and energized playing cards replacing his shurikens.

Blizzard has already shown a penchant for crossover collaborative skins, such as the recent Cowboy Bebop skins, as well as last year’s One Punch Man and Le Sserafim collaborations. So, it’s entirely possible for them to make this X-Men ’97 and Overwatch collaboration a reality. As a fan of X-Men and an Overwatch player, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for it to happen.

While it may be challenging to execute a collaboration of this scale with such an established intellectual property, many fans, myself included, would be willing to pay a significant price for these skins. It may be too late for the X-Men ’97 collaboration to coincide with the show’s first season, but perhaps Marvel and Blizzard can come together in time for season two.
