League of Legends Patch 14.8 to Remove Quicksilver Sash Interaction with Mordekaiser’s Ultimate
League of Legends Patch 14.8, set to release next week, brings a significant change that could elevate Mordekaiser to the top tier. The update eliminates the interaction between his ultimate, Realm of Death, and the item Quicksilver Sash.
Lead League gameplay designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison shared this alteration in the Patch 14.8 preview. While Mordekaiser is among the 22 champions receiving buffs, nerfs, or adjustments in the Mid-Season Invitational patch, the modification regarding QSS stands out as the most impactful.
Previously, when Mordekaiser used his ultimate on an opponent, both champions would be locked in a one-on-one scenario that heavily favored the Iron Revenant. However, a trapped target could swiftly end Realm of Death by activating Quicksilver Sash. Initially, this mechanic was implemented in 2019 as part of Morde’s rework to prevent him from dominating professional play.
Despite the intentions behind this interaction, Mordekaiser’s performance has been lackluster. In the Spring Split, he was picked only once across the major four regions, according to League pro play site Leaguepedia. Moreover, his pick rate has been declining at the Emerald and above ranks, as reported by U.GG. Phroxzon acknowledged the need for change, stating, “[Mordekaiser] has too much counterplay in especially the higher ranks, and experientially, if you’re picking Morde, you want this portion of his kit to be effective.”
The upcoming 14.8 patch, which will be played during the Mid-Season Invitational in China, marks a potential gamechanger. If the removal of the QSS interaction proves as impactful as fans anticipate, Mordekaiser may become a more prominent pick at the international event. Apart from the removal of his ability to jungle in Patch 12.23, Mordekaiser has received continuous buffs and bug fixes over the past year.
AD carries have only one week remaining to adapt to the challenge posed by the Iron Revenant’s Realm of Death, as League Patch 14.8 is scheduled to go live on April 17.
