Pedro Romero Highlights Concerns Over UK Gambling Reform

Pedro Romero, chief of partnerships at BetBlocker.org, a safer gambling software provider, has expressed concerns regarding the UK Government’s White Paper on gambling reform. During the ICE 2024 event, Romero emphasized the sense of insecurity felt by Research, Education, and Treatment organizations regarding the publication of the White Paper.

He stated that the main topic of discussion at ICE 2024, particularly concerning safer gambling, revolved around the implications of the White Paper and the anxiety it has caused. Romero highlighted the worry that many individuals in the third sector feel excluded from critical conversations regarding the future of safer gambling and harm minimization. He emphasized that this disconnect could have significant consequences, not only for the individuals and communities they serve but also for the UK’s reputation in the field of gambling.

Romero stressed the importance of bridging this gap and working together to address the challenges ahead to maintain the UK’s leadership position in promoting safer gambling practices.

During ICE, BetBlocker and the US-based International Centre for Responsible Gambling (ICRG) received a £41,000 donation from leading brands such as Light and Wonder, Flutter, Betsson Group, IGT, Novomatic, Neccton, and Playtech. Romero mentioned that the funds would primarily support the charity’s operational costs, ensuring its sustainability as a small organization. Additionally, he teased an upcoming special project planned for ICE 2025 in Barcelona, which aims to pay tribute to Clarion and the city itself.

Romero spoke positively about the relocation of ICE to Barcelona, acknowledging that ICE 2024 marked the end of an era in London and the beginning of a new chapter in Barcelona. He expressed excitement about the move, considering it a fresh opportunity for ICE to become a global gaming hub in a dynamic city. Romero looks forward to the future prospects of this new location.
