Saudi-backed superteam recruits Apex Legends players ImperialHal, Genburten, and Zer0

Exciting News from the Esports World

Falcons, a well-known Saudi-backed organization, has strengthened its presence in the esports market by acquiring the famed Apex Legends squad DarkZero. Genburten and Zer0, a powerful Australian combo, previously collaborated with TSM’s ImperialHal before moving on to represent the black-and-green colors of ALGS NA Split Two and beyond.

Strategic Announcements and Future Plans

The public announcement was made on May 28 via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. This statement comes just a few days before the start of ALGS Split Two, and it strategically puts the squad two months ahead of the next S-tier LAN event, the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Despite the fact that their new third member, ImperialHal, has yet to make his debut, the team will continue to operate from North America in the meantime.

Key Roster Changes and Organizational Shifts

In light of the Falcons’ recent purchase, DarkZero has announced the departure of substitute Sikezz, coach zz, and analyst Privacy as the company reassesses its position in the Apex scene. While the specifics were not disclosed in today’s statement, DarkZero expressed gratitude to Zer0 and Genburten for their substantial efforts over the last two years, highlighting their impact on the organization.

Genburten and Zer0 joined DarkZero from Reignite two years ago and, together with former teammate Sharky, helped enhance Australia’s standing in Apex with a historic victory at the ALGS 2022 Championship. Their constant success over the years, including recent victories in the 2023 Split Two Playoffs and a fine second-place performance in the Los Angeles Split One Playoffs, has unquestionably reinforced their legacy in the esports world.

A New Chapter for Team Falcons

Genburten and Zer0 have left DarkZero and will now represent Team Falcons. This Saudi Arabian company has expressed a strong interest in a variety of prominent esports titles, including Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, as they prepare to compete on home turf at the Esports World Cup later this year.

The Falcons’ entry into the esports world has stirred debate among gaming fans and commentators, drawing parallels to the concept of “sportswashing.” This word refers to a process in which corporations or governments seek to improve their reputation by aggressively investing in sports and entertainment. While the particular financiers of Falcons are unknown, conjecture suggests a link to the Saudi royal family.

Falcons Apex will make their debut on June 1 at ALGS Split Two, followed by a participation at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh in July, marking a new chapter in their competitive adventure.
