The International sets a new record for esports prize pool for the seventh consecutive year

Dota 2 Community Makes History with Record-Breaking Prize Pool

The Dota 2 community has achieved yet another historic milestone with its seventh consecutive year of breaking records. The International, the premier Dota 2 tournament, has once again set a new all-time high for the esports industry. Thanks to the 2018 Battle Pass crowdfunding campaign, which has raised over $24 million in prize money, the prize pool for The International has reached $24,787,916, surpassing the previous record set by TI7.

Continued Growth and Popularity

This year’s event marks the fourth consecutive year of breaking records, with Dota 2 securing its dominance in the esports industry since TI4. After the incredible success of TI3, the tournament has experienced a significant surge in popularity and payout.

A Thrilling Crowdfunding Campaign

For the first time in Dota 2 history, this year’s crowdfunding campaign faced uncertainties as the prize pool lagged behind that of TI7. However, Valve Corporation released the Battle Level and Treasure Bundle, resulting in a boost in contributions. The addition of the Immortal Treasure III surpassed last year’s record, ensuring the success of this year’s crowdfunding campaign.

Looking Ahead to The International 8

As The International 8 approaches, there is still an opportunity for the community to contribute further. However, without the incentives of the Battle Pass, it is uncertain if there will be another surge in contributions. It may be time for Valve to reintroduce stretch goals, which were successful in boosting sales during the TI5 Compendium.

The International 8 will take place from August 15th to 25th at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada. This marks the first time the tournament will be held outside of Valve’s home state of Seattle and the United States.
